Premarin

Drug General Information

Premarine is a female hormone and is indicated for women whose bodies no longer produce the necessary amount. It is known to reduce menopause symptoms (vaginal dryness).

Medicine taking

Follow the directions provided by your doctor. Read the patient leaflet that comes with this medicine carefully.

Fill the applicator with the medicine and insert the applicator high into the vagina; press the plunger to release the medicine. After the procedure clean the applicator with warm soapy water and rinse well.

It is recommended to take this medicine on the same time every day.

The missed dose is to be taken immediately as soon as you remember, the remaining doses are to be taken at regular intervals. However, if according to the schedule the next dose is to be taken within a short period of time, it’s recommended to skip the missed dose ant take the rest of the days’ doses as specified.

Precautions

Warning: estrogens have been reported to increase the risk of breast cancer, womb cancer and ovary cancer especially in women who receive estrogens-only hormone therapy. In combination with progestin might infrequently cause heart disease, blood clots and breast cancer. Supposedly, the risk of developing cancer depends on the length of treatment period; therefore the medicine is to be taken for the shortest possible period at the minimum effective dose.

You might be required to undergo condition monitoring in case you are using other vaginal medicines. Make sure you inform your doctor of any particular medical conditions (asthma, diabetes, seizures, migraine headaches, liver or kidney disease, heart disease, abnormal calcium level in the blood, depression, high blood pressure during pregnancy, womb problems, cholesterol/lipid problems, gall bladder disease, excessive weight gain, allergies, pregnancy or breast-feeding) and your family medical history (especially breast lumps or breast cancer).

During the period of treatment it is important to keep all doctor and laboratory appointments. It is strongly recommended that at least once a year you should have a complete physical examinations and regular mammograms in order to monitor any changes in your condition.

This medicine might cause dizziness. Do not get engaged in hazardous activities or activities that require fast reaction until you are sure about the reaction of your body to this medicine. You should also limit the use of alcohol and nicotine during the period of treatment.

For women: this medicine can cause harm to the fetus. Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or might conceive during the period of treatment. It is not known if this medicine passes into breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking this medicine. Premarin might lead to the failure of latex condoms. Make sure you consult your doctor and choose an additional safe contraceptive.

Possible Side Effects

Consult your physician immediately in case of experiencing mood swings, severe depression, calf swelling, sudden severe headache, chest pain, anhelation, slurred speech, vision changes, breast lumps, changes in vaginal bleeding, unusual vaginal discharge, vaginal itching  and odor, yellowing of skin.

Certain mild side effects may occur. You can continue taking Premarin in case of experiencing such symptoms as dizziness, light-headedness, headache, stomach upset, bloating, nausea, weight changes, or breast tenderness.

Storage

This medicine is to be stored at room temperature (77° F), away from heat, moisture and direct light.

Overdose

The main symptoms of overdose are the following: severe nausea/vomiting; excessive vaginal bleeding. In case of the drug overdose immediately contact the doctor.

Additional Information

Do not share this drug with those to whom it was not prescribed. Use this drug only to treat specific medical conditions as prescribed by your doctor. If using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
