Deltasone

Drug General Information

Deltasone, belongs to the group of steroids and can be used in a variety of ways: to alleviate inflammation and relieve symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and severe cases of asthma; to treat adrenal cortex insufficiency; to treat abnormal adrenal gland development, allergic conditions, blood disorders and certain cancers (in combination with other medications), diseases of the connective tissue, eye diseases, fluid retention, lung diseases, prevention of organ rejection, skin diseases, thyroid gland inflammation, trichinosis. However, Deltasone weakens the resistance of your body to infections; and it can take longer to treat them.

Medicine taking

Do not stop taking Deltasone without talking to your doctor. It is generally advised to stop taking this drug by reducing the drug gradually. In case you are taking this drug for a long period of time, it is possible you get Cushing's syndrome (a rare condition caused by excess corticosteroid hormones in the body, characterized chiefly by obesity of the trunk and face, high blood pressure, fatigue, and loss of calcium from the bones).

Precautions

If you are pregnant or planning to conceive, inform your doctor immediately in case you are currently taking Deltasone. If you have an inactive form of tuberculosis, you must get an anti-tuberculosis medication before taking Deltasone. In case of having cirrhosis of liver or active thyroid gland you might be prescribed a lower dosage of this drug.

The case is infrequent, but some people might develop Kaposi’s sarcoma (a form of skin cancer), that is likely to go away as you stop taking Deltasone.

You should try to avoid exposure to such diseases as chickenpox and measles, as it can have serious consequences (even cause death) for those taking Deltasone.

Possible Side Effects

Possible side effects you might experience when taking this drug include euphoria, insomnia, mood changes, personality changes, psychotic behavior or severe depression. If these symptoms continue or appear to be bothersome, contact your doctor. When a high dosage of this drug is administered, you are likely to experience fluid retention and high blood pressure.

Certain other side effects might also occur: headache, allergic-type reactions, inflamed esophagus or pancreas, osteoporosis, peptic ulcer, poor healing of wounds, increased pressure inside eyes or skull, bone fractures, bulging eyes, congestive heart failure, convulsions, face redness, glaucoma, sweating, thin, fragile skin, dizziness.

Storage

This drug is to be stored in a hermetic container away from direct light, heat or moisture. Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use the drug past its expiry date.

Additional Information

Inform your doctor about such particular medical conditions as a latent case of diabetes, a blood-clotting disorder caused by a vitamin K deficiency, or the fact of taking the immunosuppressant drug.
