Prevacid

Drug General Information

Prevacid is used to treat and prevent stomach and intestinal ulcers, erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid) and certain other conditions caused by the excessive production of acid (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome).

Medicine taking

Prevacid comes in the form of a capsule for oral administration. It is to be taken once a day before meals with plenty of water, without chewing or crushing the capsule. Do not stop taking this drug without talking to your doctor even if your condition improves considerably.

The missed dose is to be taken immediately as soon as you remember, the remaining doses are to be taken at regular intervals. However, if according to the schedule the next dose is to be taken within a short period of time, it’s recommended to skip the missed dose and take the rest of the days’ doses as specified.

Precautions

Inform your doctor of liver disease. It might be a direct contraindications or can mean you require additional monitoring of you condition or dosage adjustment.

Prevacid has been classified by the Food and Drug Administration as type “B” (harmless to the fetus), i.e. safe to take during pregnancy. However, make sure you consult your doctor in case you are pregnant or might conceive during the period of treatment. It is not known whether the drug passes into breast milk. If you are breast-feeding, make sure you consult your doctor before using this drug.

Possible Side Effects

Possible side effects you might experience when taking this drug include diarrhea, nausea or abdominal pain, dizziness or headache. If these symptoms continue or appear to be bothersome, contact your doctor.

Stop taking Prevacid and contact your doctor immediately in case of anhelation, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; hives.

Storage

This drug is to be stored at room temperature away from direct light, heat or moisture. Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use the drug past its expiry date.

Overdose

The symptoms of Prevacid are not well studied. In case of the drug overdose immediately contact the doctor.

Additional Information

Do not share this drug with those to whom it was not prescribed. Use this drug only to treat specific medical conditions as prescribed by your doctor. If using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out.

If you are currently taking other drugs and are not sure about their interaction with this one, consult your doctor to learn about it as certain medicines might make Prevacid less efficient or cause serious side effects.
