Pravachol

Drug General Information

This medicine belongs to the hmg-coa reductase inhibitors used to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in your blood.

Do not take this drug in case you are also taking fibrates (gemfibrozil, clofibrate, fenofibrate) or high-dose niacin. Inform your doctor about the fact of taking cyclosporine, as additional monitoring of your condition or dosage might be required. Make sure you inform your doctor about any particular medical conditions – allergies, pregnancy or breast-feeding.

It is not recommended to use Pravachol in case you have a history of liver disease, low blood pressure, severe infection, uncontrolled seizures, metabolic or endocrine problems. Consult your doctor if you have any questions about the use of Pravachol in such case.

Medicine taking

Follow the directions on the label or those provided by your doctor. This drug is to be taken on an empty stomach or with some food, at the same time every day.

The missed dose is to be taken immediately as soon as you remember, the remaining doses are to be taken at regular intervals. However, if according to the schedule the next dose is to be taken within a short period of time, it’s recommended to skip the missed dose and take the rest of the days’ doses as specified.

Precautions

Follow the instructions provided by your doctor; inform your doctor of the fact of taking this drug before having a surgery. Pravachol passes into mother’s milk. If you are breast-feeding, make sure you consult your doctor before using this drug.

Possible Side Effects

Possible side effects you might experience when taking this drug include dizziness or flu-like symptoms. If these symptoms continue or appear to be bothersome, contact your doctor.

Contact your doctor immediately in case of experiencing muscle pain, weakness, rash, jaundice, easy bleeding, sore throat, swelling of hands, face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue, difficulty swallowing or breathing.

Overdose

In case of the drug overdose immediately contact the doctor.

Additional Information

Do not share this drug with those to whom it was not prescribed. Use this drug only to treat specific medical conditions as prescribed by your doctor. If using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out.

If you are currently taking other drugs and are not sure about their interaction with this one, consult your doctor to learn about it as certain medicines might make Pravachol less efficient or cause serious side effects.
