Mevacor

Drug General Information

Mevacor is used to lower the level of cholesterol and triglyceride in your blood and to treat other conditions as prescribed by your doctor.

It is not recommended to take this medicine in case you are also taking gemfibrozil, HIV protease inhibitors, azole antifungals, macrolide antibiotics or nefazodone.

Inform your doctor about the fact of taking amiodarone, "blood thinners", high doses of niacin, fibrates, or St. John's wort, as additional monitoring of your condition or dose adjustment might be required.

It is not recommended to use Mevacor in case you have a history of liver disease, abnormal liver function test results. Consult your doctor if you have any questions about the use of Mevacor in such case.

Medicine taking

Follow the directions on the label or those provided by your doctor. It is not recommended to drink grape juice while taking this medicine. In case of taking this drug once a day, it is recommended to take it with evening meal, unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor.

The missed dose is to be taken immediately as soon as you remember, the remaining doses are to be taken at regular intervals. However, if according to the schedule the next dose is to be taken within a short period of time, it’s recommended to skip the missed dose and take the rest of the days’ doses as specified.

Precautions

Inform your doctor of the fact of previous allergic reaction to Mevacor.

For women: If you are pregnant or might conceive during the period of treatment, consult your doctor to learn about the benefits and risks of taking this medicine. It is not known whether Mevacor passes into mother’s milk. If you are breast-feeding, make sure you consult your doctor before using this drug.

Possible Side Effects

The most common side effect that might occur is constipation. It is likely to go away as your body adjusts to the drug. Contact your doctor immediately in case of experiencing rash, jaundice, unusual bleeding/ bruising or sore throat. Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if experiencing muscle pain, tenderness or weakness.

An allergic reaction is infrequent; its symptoms might include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness and anhelation.

Overdose

In case of the drug overdose immediately contact the doctor.

Additional Information

It is recommended to combine this drug with a balanced diet.

Do not share this drug with those to whom it was not prescribed. Use this drug only to treat specific medical conditions as prescribed by your doctor. If using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out.

If you are currently taking other drugs and are not sure about their interaction with this one, consult your doctor to learn about it as certain medicines might make Mevacor less efficient or cause serious side effects.
