Nolvadex

Drug General Information

Nolvadex  is an anti-estrogen that is used to treat or prevent breast cancer.

Warning: tamoxifen (the active compound) infrequently might cause serious side effects (cancer of the uterus, strokes and blood clots in the lung) or death.

Medicine taking

Follow the directions on the patient leaflet or those provided by your doctor. Nolvadex is to taken on an empty stomach or with some food.

The missed dose is to be taken immediately as soon as you remember, the remaining doses are to be taken at regular intervals. However, if according to the schedule the next dose is to be taken within a short period of time, it’s recommended to skip the missed dose and take the rest of the days’ doses as specified.

Precautions

Discuss all the risks and benefits of taking this medicine with your doctor if you are going to take this medicine for breast cancer prevention. However, if you are going to take this drug for breast cancer treatment, the benefits are clearly greater than any side effects likely to occur.

Do not take Nolvadex if you are also taking letrozole. Inform your doctor about the fact of taking fluorouracil, mitomycin or rifampin as some additional dose monitoring might be required. Inform your doctor of any medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding before taking this medicine.

It is recommended to use an additional non-hormonal form of birth control during the period of treatment to avoid undesirable pregnancy.

This medicine can cause harm to the fetus. Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or might conceive during the period of treatment. It is not known if this medicine passes into breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking this medicine. Immediately inform your doctor if you develop the following symptoms: abnormal vaginal bleeding, irregular or abnormal menstrual periods, chest pain, trouble breathing, one-sided weakness.

Possible Side Effects

Consult your physician immediately in case of experiencing vaginal bleeding. Certain mild side effects may occur. You can continue taking this drug if you are experiencing hot flashes, vaginal discharge, irregular or lighter menstrual cycles, weight loss, or diarrhea as these symptoms re likely to go away during treatment.

Overdose

The main symptoms of overdose are trembling, dizziness and irregular heartbeat. In case of the drug overdose immediately contact the doctor.

Additional Information

Do not share this drug with those to whom it was not prescribed. Use this drug only to treat specific medical conditions as prescribed by your doctor. If using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
