Plavix

Drug General Information

This drug belongs to the group of antiplatelet agents. It is used to reduce the risk of stroke or heart attack in patients with atherosclerosis.

You might be required to have an additional dose monitoring in case you are using other medicines, such as ibuprofen, warfarin, heparin, phenytoin, tamoxifen, tolbutamide, torsemide or fluvastatin.

Make sure you inform your doctor of any particular medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy or breast-feeding before taking this drug.

It is not recommended that you use this drug if you have gastrointestinal bleeding or a history of clotting disorders or ulcers. Consult your doctor in order to learn if there are any contraindications for you to use this medicine.

Medicine taking

Follow the directions on the label and those provided by your doctor. This medicine is to be taken on an empty stomach or with some food.

The missed dose is to be taken immediately as soon as you remember, the remaining doses are to be taken at regular intervals. However, if according to the schedule the next dose is to be taken within a short period of time, it’s recommended to skip the missed dose and take the rest of the days’ doses as specified.

Precautions

In case you are currently taking aspirin or are going to consult your doctor to learn whether you are to stop taking it. Carefully read all the labels on all your medicines to make sure they do not contain pain relievers, fever reducers (ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin). Consult your physician in case you have any questions or something is not clear.

It is important that you keep all your appointments and inform your doctor if you become ill, including if you have a fever.

Tell the doctor about the treatment with this medicine if you are to have a surgery or an emergency care.

For women: It’s not known if this drug passes into mother’s milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible Side Effects

Consult your physician immediately in case of experiencing sudden and severe headache, change in vision, rash, itching, nosebleeds, excessive bleeding, discoloration of urine or stool, sore throat or fever, seizures, yellowing of the skin or eyes; or pale skin. Certain mild side effects may occur. You can continue taking Plavix in case of experiencing diarrhea or indigestion. Consult your physician if experiencing any side effects that appear to be bothersome.

Overdose

If overdose is suspected consult your doctor or physician immediately.

Additional Information

Do not share this drug with those to whom it was not prescribed. Use this drug only to treat specific medical conditions as prescribed by your doctor. If using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out.

If you are currently taking other drugs and are not sure about their interaction with Plavix consult your doctor to learn more about it as certain drugs might cause unwanted side effects or make this medicine inefficient.
