Norvasc

Drug General Information

Norvasc belongs to the group of calcium channel blockers. This drug widens the blood vessels, therefore making it easier for the heart to pump blood and reducing its workload. Norvasc might also be used to treat high blood pressure) and angina.

Medicine taking

Norvasc comes in the form of a tablet for oral administration. It is to be taken once a day with milk or food as it might upset your stomach.

The missed dose is to be taken immediately as soon as you remember, the remaining doses are to be taken at regular intervals. However, if according to the schedule the next dose is to be taken within a short period of time, it’s recommended to skip the missed dose and take the rest of the days’ doses as specified.

Precautions

Inform your doctor of the fact of having liver disease, another disease of the heart or blood vessels (sick sinus syndrome, aortic stenosis, heart failure, low blood pressure, coronary artery disease) as you might require a dose adjustment or a more careful monitoring of your condition.

Elderly people should be especially careful as side effects are more likely to occur in their cases. Consult your doctor in order to learn if your dose should be decreased.

Norvask has been classified by the Food and Drug Administration as type “C” i.e. it is not known whether it is harmful to the fetus. Make sure you consult your doctor in case you are pregnant or might conceive during the period of treatment to learn about the risks. It is not known whether this drug passes into mother’s milk. If you are breast-feeding, make sure you consult your doctor before using this drug.

Possible Side Effects

Continue taking Norvasc and consult your doctor in case of experiencing such symptoms as fatigue, headache, insomnia, hot flashes, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, difficult urination. A few other side effects may occur. Consult your physician if experiencing any side effects that appear to be bothersome.

In case of experiencing any of the serious side effects listed below stop taking Norvasc and immediately consult you physician: an allergic reaction (anhelation, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, hives; fast/ slow heartbeat, chest pain, severe dizziness or fainting, psychosis, jaundice.

Storage

The medicine is to be stored in hermetic, light-resistant containers at controlled room temperature, 59° to 86°F away from direct light and moisture.

Overdose

The symptoms of Norvask overdose include dizziness, weakness, shortness of breath, fainting, unusually fast or slow heartbeat, coma, slurred speech and confusion. In case of the drug overdose immediately contact the doctor.

Additional Information

Do not share this drug with those to whom it was not prescribed. Use this drug only to treat specific medical conditions as prescribed by your doctor. If using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
