Lopressor

Drug General Information

This medicine belongs to the group of beta-blockers and is indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure and angina. As this drug works by controlling high blood pressure, it helps prevent strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems.
Warning: If you have angina, do not stop taking this medicine without first talking to your doctor, as this should be a gradual supervised process.

Do not take Lopressor if you are also taking mibefradil. Inform your doctor about the fact of taking amiodarone, barbiturates, birth control pills, cimetidine, disopyramide, flecainide, indomethacin, methimazole, propylthiouracil, quinidine or verapamil as some additional dose monitoring might be required. Inform your doctor of any medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding before taking this medicine.

Medicine taking

Follow the directions on the label and those provided by your doctor. This drug is to be taken either always with food or always on an empty stomach on the same time each day.

The missed dose is to be taken immediately as soon as you remember, the remaining doses are to be taken at regular intervals. However, if according to the schedule the next dose is to be taken within a short period of time, it’s recommended to skip the missed dose and take the rest of the days’ doses as specified.

Precautions

This medicine might cause drowsiness or dizziness. Do not get engaged in hazardous activities or activities that require fast reaction until you are sure about the reaction of your body to this medicine. You should also limit the use of alcohol during the period of treatment. Before you begin taking any new medicine, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist to learn about its interaction with Lopressor.

For women: If you are pregnant or might conceive during the period of treatment consult your doctor to learn about any risks involved. This medicine passes into breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking this medicine.

For patients with pancreatic diabetes: it is strongly recommended to check blood glucose levels regularly as the use of this medicine might mask the signs of low blood sugar.

Possible Side Effects

Consult your physician immediately in case of experiencing difficulty breathing.

Certain mild side effects may occur. You can continue taking Lopressor in case of experiencing such symptoms as mild drowsiness, lightheadedness, dizziness, unusual tiredness or weakness, as these are likely to go away during treatment. Consult your physician if experiencing any side effects that appear to be bothersome.

Storage

This medicine is to be stored in a hermetic container away from direct light and moisture.

Overdose

The main symptoms of Lopressor overdose include very slow heart rate, severe dizziness, fainting, weakness, difficulty breathing. If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Additional Information

Do not share this drug with those to whom it was not prescribed. Use this drug only to treat specific medical conditions as prescribed by your doctor. If using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
