Zithromax

Drug General Information

Zithromax is a generic drug that can be used for the treatment of bacterial infections, e.g. bronchitis, pneumonia, tonsillitis, skin infections, ear infections or sexually transmitted diseases.

Medicine taking

Zithromax comes in the form of a capsule, tablet, and liquid for oral administration. It is to be taken with plenty of water or some food in case it upsets you stomach, once a day, during the period of 2 to 5 days. Continue taking this drug even if your condition improves considerably. The liquid form of Zithomax should be taken 1 hour before or 2 hours after meal.

The missed dose is to be taken immediately as soon as you remember, the remaining doses are to be taken at regular intervals. However, if according to the schedule the next dose is to be taken within a short period of time, it’s recommended to skip the missed dose and take the rest of the days’ doses as specified.

Precautions

Before taking Zithromax, tell your doctor if you have liver disease. You may not be able to take Zithromax, or you may require a lower dose or special monitoring during treatment.

Zithromax has been classified by the Food and Drug Administration as type “B” (harmless to the fetus), i.e. safe to take during pregnancy. However, make sure you consult your doctor in case you are pregnant or might conceive during the period of treatment. It is not known if Zithromax passes into mother’s milk. If you are breast-feeding, make sure you consult your doctor before using this drug.

Possible Side Effects

If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Zithromax and seek emergency medical attention: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); or liver damage (yellowing of the skin or eyes, nausea, abdominal pain or discomfort, unusual bleeding or bruising, severe fatigue). Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur.

Continue to take Zithromax and talk to your doctor if you experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain; unusual dizziness, fatigue, or headache; vaginal yeast infection; a rash; or increased sensitivity to sunlight. Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Storage

Zithromax is to be stored at the temperature 59° to 86°F. The suspension is to be stored at the temperature 41° to 86°F and discarded after 10 days. The suspension should be shaken thoroughly before use.

Overdose

The main symptoms of Zithromax overdose are the following: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal discomfort. In case of the drug overdose immediately contact the doctor.

Additional Information

Do not share this drug with those to whom it was not prescribed. Use this drug only to treat specific medical conditions as prescribed by your doctor. If using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out.

If you are currently taking other drugs and are not sure about their interaction with this one, consult your doctor to learn about it as certain medicines might make Zithromax less efficient or cause serious side effects.

Zithromax might cause sun sensitivity. Avoid prolonged sun exposure and use protection from the direct sun rays.
