Cipro

Drug General Information

This medicine is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections.

If you are currently taking other antibiotics, sucralfate, theophylline products, warfarin, cyclosporine, glyburide, phenytoin, clozapine, live vaccines, probenecid, ropinirole, or quinapril inform your doctor about that, as in this case additional monitoring of your condition might be required. Make sure you inform your doctor of the fact of taking phenothiazines and tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline, isoniazid and theophylline) as combined with Cipro the these medicines might increase the risk of seizures.

Inform your doctor of any particular medical conditions that you have – seizures, mental disorders, kidney disease, tendon problems, liver disease, blood vessel problems, allergies, pregnancy or breast-feeding.

Medicine taking

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or with some food.

The missed dose is to be taken immediately as soon as you remember, the remaining doses are to be taken at regular intervals. However, if according to the schedule the next dose is to be taken within a short period of time, it’s recommended to skip the missed dose and take the rest of the days’ doses as specified.

Precautions

This medicine is not to be taken if you ever had an allergic reaction to other fluoroquinolone antibiotics (levofloxacin or ofloxacin). This medicine might cause dizziness; it might also cause your skin sensitivity. Avoid being outside for a long time and wear protective clothes.

This medicine might cause dizziness. Do not get engaged in hazardous activities or activities that require fast reaction until you are sure about the reaction of your body to this medicine. You should also limit the use of alcohol during the period of treatment. Before you begin taking any new medicine, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist to learn about its interaction with Cipro.

If you are pregnant or might conceive during the period of treatment, talk to your doctor to learn about potential risks involved.

Possible Side Effects

Consult your physician immediately in case of experiencing sun sensitivity, continuing diarrhea, seizures, mood swings, easy bruising or bleeding, swelling of throat or tongue, persistent sore throat or fever, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, stomach pain, jaundice, dark urine, fatigue  within the period of Cipro use.  Certain mild side effects may occur. You can continue taking Cipro in case of experiencing stomach upset, loss of appetite, diarrhea, nausea, headache, vision changes or dizziness, as these symptoms tend to go away soon.

The use of Cipro for a long time might cause vaginal yeast infection or thrush. Make sure you contact your doctor as soon as possible in case of experiencing patches in your mouth, vaginal discharge or other symptoms that appear to be unusual of bothersome.

This medicine is not likely to cause an allergic reaction; however you should seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, anhelation.

Storage

This drug is to be stored in a hermetic container away from direct light, heat or moisture. Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use the drug past its expiry date.

Overdose

In case of the drug overdose immediately contact the doctor.

Additional Information

Do not share this drug with those to whom it was not prescribed. Use this drug only to treat specific medical conditions as prescribed by your doctor. If using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out.

If you are currently taking other drugs and are not sure about their interaction with this one, consult your doctor to learn about it as certain medicines might make Cipro less efficient or cause serious side effects.
