Amoxil

Drug General Information

Amoxil belongs to the penicillin group, which is known for its antibacterial effects. Amoxil has won recognition as an effective remedy to cure pneumonia, tonsillitis, earache and ear contagions, infections of urogenital system and skin infections, intestinal upset, diarrhea and several others.

Medicine taking

Amoxil is produced in the form of capsules, chewable tablets, fluid form and drops for oral use. It is to be taken with the frequency of 3 times a day, every 8 hours, to ensure optimal concentration in blood. In case of the fluid or drop form of the drug it is necessary to stir the liquid in order to make sure it’s evenly mixed.

The Amoxil drops for children are to be added to any cold liquid if drunk immediately afterwards, or simply placed on a tongue. The chewable tablets are to be chewed well before being swallowed. The capsules of Amoxil are to be swallowed without crushing or chewing them and washed down with plenty of water.

Do not exceed the dose recommended by the doctor. The drug should be applied even when your condition improves considerably, however you shouldn’t exceed or reduce the time of taking the medicine without consulting your physician.

The missed dose is to be taken immediately as soon as you remember, the remaining doses are to be taken at regular intervals. However, if according to the schedule the next dose is to be taken within a short period of time, it’s recommended to skip the missed dose and take the rest of the days’ doses as specified.

Precautions

Consult your doctor if you ever have experienced cases of allergic reaction to drugs from the penicillin group or cephalosporin or any other components of the medicine. Make sure you mention the fact of having kidney disease or any other problems with your stomach and intestinal.

Amoxil has been classified by the Food and Drug Administration as type “B” (harmless to the fetus), i.e. safe to take during pregnancy. However, make sure you consult your doctor in case you are pregnant or might conceive during the period of treatment. Although there has been no evidence of serious problems, Amoxil, which passes into mother’s milk, may cause diarrhea, allergic reaction or yeast infection of the suckling baby. If you are breast-feeding, make sure you consult your doctor before using this drug.

Possible Side Effects

Consult your physician immediately in case of experiencing an attack of diarrhea or crampy abdominal pains within the period of Amoxil use.  Certain mild side effects may occur. You can continue taking Amoxil in case of experiencing such symptoms as mild nausea, vomiting, mild diarrhea, abdominal pain, furred tongue or white patches on the tongue (that is the case of a yeast infection), vagina itching and discharge, “hairy tongue”,  sore mouth or/and tongue. A few other side effects may occur. Consult your physician if experiencing any side effects that appear to be bothersome.

In case of experiencing any of the serious side effects listed below stop taking Amoxil and immediately consult you physician: allergic reaction (anhelation, closing of the throat, hives, tongue swelling or lips swelling, rash or loss of consciousness); convulsions, bruising or bleeding.

Storage

The drug is to be stored away from direct light or open fire. The capsule or tablet form of Amoxil is not to be stored in moist or hot places as the above mentioned conditions may cause the break-up of the medicine therefore decreasing its therapeutic effects. The liquid form of Amoxil is to be stored in a cool place, however make sure the temperature is well above 32ºF as the medicine should not get frozen. Follow the instructions on the label; do not store or use medicine past its expiry date or when the medicine is no longer needed. Keep out of the reach of children, especially medicine that has been discarded.

Overdose

The main symptoms of Amoxil overdose are the following: muscle spasms, asthenia,  mild or acute pain, twitching, pain in the fingers or toes, loss of  sensitivity in the fingers or toes, convulsions, confused mental state, coma, or excitation. In case of the drug overdose immediately contact the doctor.

Additional Information

Consult your physician immediately in case of experiencing an attack of diarrhea and crampy abdominal pains within the period of Amoxil use. All the amount of drug prescribed by your physician is to be taken, even in case of considerable improvement of your condition, as certain symptoms may disappear even though the infection is still intact. In addition the use of Amoxil may reduce the efficiency of oral contraceptives, so in case of use of any oral contraceptives it’s necessary to consider simultaneous use of another birth control method to prevent undesirable pregnancy.
