Lexapro

Drug General Information

Lexapro belongs to the group of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). It is widely used for the treatment of the symptoms of depression and generalized anxiety disorder.

Medicine taking

Lexapro comes in the form of a tablet and liquid for oral administration. It is to be taken once a day with food or without it, with plenty of water to wash it down.

Follow the directions on the label or those provided by your doctor. Do not increase of decrease the dose without consulting your doctor. Continue taking Lexapro even if your condition improves considerably. For the full effect of this drug it is to be taken for a few weeks.

The missed dose is to be taken immediately as soon as you remember, the remaining doses are to be taken at regular intervals. However, if according to the schedule the next dose is to be taken within a short period of time, it’s recommended to skip the missed dose and take the rest of the days’ doses as specified.

Precautions

Inform you doctor about the fact of having disease, kidney disease; suffering from seizures, mania or having suicidal thoughts. These might be the contraindications or you might require a dose adjustment.

It is not recommend to take Lexapro if you are currently taking citalopram or had an allergic reaction to this chemical.

Lexapro has been classified by the Food and Drug Administration as type “C” i.e. it is not known whether it can harm the fetus. In case you are pregnant or might conceive during the period of treatment consult your doctor before using this drug to learn about possible risks involved. Lexapro passes into mother’s milk. If you are breast-feeding, make sure you consult your doctor before using this drug.

Possible Side Effects

In case of experiencing any of the serious side effects listed below stop taking Lexapro and immediately consult you physician: allergic reaction (anhelation, closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, face; hives), irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, high blood pressure, chills or fever.

Continue taking Lexapro in case of experiencing such less serious symptoms as headache, tremor, nervousness, anxiety, nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, insomnia, impotence or difficulty having an orgasm. Side effects other than those listed here may also occur.  Consult your physician if experiencing any side effects that appear to be bothersome.

Storage

This drug is to be stored in a hermetic container at room temperature away from direct light, heat or moisture. Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use the drug past its expiry date.

Overdose

The main symptoms of Lexapro overdose might include nausea, vomiting, tremor, drowsiness, dizziness, sweating, fast heartbeat. In case of the drug overdose immediately contact the doctor.

Additional Information

Do not share this drug with those to whom it was not prescribed. Use this drug only to treat specific medical conditions as prescribed by your doctor. If using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
