Effexor XR

Drug General Information

Effexor XR is a powerful inhibitor of the reuptake of serotonin and noradrenaline-two neurotransmitters thought to play important roles in the pathophysiology of depression. Effexor XR is known to correct the imbalance of these two chemicals therefore relieving the main symptoms of depression.

Medicine taking

Effexor XR comes in the form of capsules for oral administration. It is to be taken once a day with some food and washed down with plenty of water without crushing or chewing it unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor.

The missed dose is to be taken immediately as soon as you remember, the remaining doses are to be taken at regular intervals. However, if according to the schedule the next dose is to be taken within a short period of time, it’s recommended to skip the missed dose and take the rest of the days’ doses as specified.

Precautions

Make sure you monitor your blood pressure as this drug may raise its level in some patients. Do not suddenly stop taking this drug without consulting your doctor as this might cause serious side effects. Your condition should be additionally monitored in case your condition is getting worse (agitation, irritability, hostility, restlessness)

If you are pregnant of planning to conceive do not take this antidepressant without previously talking to your doctor. 

This drug might cause drowsiness; it’s not recommended to get engaged into any hazardous activities during the period of treatment. The use of alcohol might lessen your ability to react quickly and increase the risk of heatstroke. It is recommended to stand up and sit down carefully in the mornings during the treatment.

Possible Side Effects

Continue taking Effexor XR and consult your doctor in case of experiencing such symptoms as nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, abdominal pain, loss of appetite or weight, drowsiness or dizziness, anxiety, agitation, insomnia; sexual problems, sweating, increase in blood cholesterol levels. A few other side effects may occur. Consult your physician if experiencing any side effects that appear to be bothersome.

In case of experiencing any of the serious side effects listed below stop taking Effexor XR and immediately consult you physician: an allergic reaction (anhelation, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue or face; hives), seizures, irregular heartbeat or severely high blood pressure.

Storage

This drug is to be stored in a hermetic container at room temperature (68° F to 77° F) away from direct light, heat or moisture. Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use the drug past its expiry date.

Overdose

The main symptoms of Effexor XR overdose are the following: dizziness, drowsiness, numbness, nausea, irregular heartbeats, seizures or unconsciousness. In case of the drug overdose immediately contact the doctor.

Additional Information

Do not share this drug with those to whom it was not prescribed. Use this drug only to treat specific medical conditions as prescribed by your doctor. If using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
